Description/Definition of APD, VPD, and Speech Therapy Needs

Sensory Processing Disorders

    • Sensory processing issues are difficulties with organizing and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Kids may be over sensitive to sensory input, undersensitive, or both.
    • Current estimates indicate that 5% to 16.5% of the general population have symptoms associated with sensory processing challenges
    • The most effective therapies include Physical therapy, Vision therapy,
    • Listening therapy (LT),
    • Psychotherapy(for people who have developed a mood disorder or anxiety because of SPD), Speech and language therapy.
    • Processing disorder is the symptom of a more foundational weakness in the volitional brain sensory- motor circuits
    • Every sensory input eventually is noticed in our external world as a motor output
    • Focusing on the motor output is like addressing just the tip of the iceberg.
    • Sensory inputs which include proprioception, interoception, auditory, vision,  touch, taste, and smell have to integrate seamlessly to foster a body in homeostasis. A well grounded mind, body and spirit fosters robust overall  growth and development including speech and language processing.
    • Symptoms include
      • Think clothing feels too scratchy or itchy.
      • Think lights seem too bright.
      • Think sounds seem too loud.
      • Think soft touches feel too hard.
      • Experienced food textures make them gag.
      • Have poor balance or seem clumsy.
      • Are afraid to play on the swings.

The Most Detrimental Disorders Under SPDs Include:

  • Auditory Processing Disorder
    • Auditory Processing Disorder(APD) refers to the brain’s inability to process information through the ears. This does not relate to hearing loss rather it is an issue with the brain being unable to differentiate specific sounds.
    •  For example, if someone says, “please walk to the lake” an individual diagnosed with APD might hear, “please talk to blake.”
    • You ask, “how are you doing?”and they might interpret it as. “Now where are you going?”
    • While this diagnosis can begin at all ages, the first prominent symptoms of APD will begin around the age of 7 years old. It is found that around 3-7% of all school-aged children are diagnosed with APD.
  • Visual Processing Disorder
    • Visual Processing Disorder(VPD) refers to the brain’s inability to process information through the eyes.
    • Visual processing disorders (VPDs) affect many students diagnosed with language-based learning disabilities.
    • Some of the many symptoms include: having trouble drawing or copying, inability to detect differences in shapes or letters, and letter reversals.
    • Studies have shown that 1 out of every 4 children (25% of all children) have a vision problem that affects learning.
  • Speech Delays
    • Speech delays are when a child is not able to use words or other forms of communication at the expected ages.
